Women were able to achieve basic rights as a man in the 1970s, meaning they also got to play sports like men. Women already got the permission to formally play basketball, but it now became more decorated. By this era, women's basketball had gained notice from the International Olympic Committee. Funding for women's basketball in schools and for interest, began to increase. The Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), was then created. The AIAW would rule women's college sports, and would also host championships. The AIAW was based off of the Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (CIAW). The CIAW would provide the ground rules for the association, and the AIAW would expand off of that. Membership in the AIAW expanded after Title IX was created, allowing popularity of the group to grow even more.
