Civil RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN SPORTS
An important figure in sports for the Civil Rights Movement would be the boxer Muhammad Ali. Ali somewhat represented the blacks in the Civil Rights Movement. He had a strong and eager personality to get things done. Ali was actually praised by Martin Luther King Jr. over not joining the draft because of the way that the US treated the blacks. Statistics show that 84% of blacks disapproved of the Vietnam War, but yet were still being drafted to fight in it. He was then jailed for five years and lost his boxing license. Ali was also widely respected by the black community because of the shameless figure he was against the whites. He took part in many civil rights movements, including one in Los Angeles in which 200 protestors were violently beaten. He would end up inspiring the youth into creating movements against things that weren't appreciated, mainly in the civil rights area.
Quote- "I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.”
