The civil rights movment
Although blacks were guaranteed to have the same rights as blacks, this was not exactly the case. States would sometimes ignore the orders of the government to stand solid on the "whites are better than blacks" idea. One example being the Little Rock 9. This was an occasion in which 9 black students went into an all-white school known as Central High School. The governor of Arkansas tried his best to keep the school segregated, so the President of the United States had to step up and send in people to escort the students into the school. There was a big show of whites not accepting this change, some even spitting on the high school students. Movements would be happening all over the country, with many big figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. These two leaders had different views on how to achieve the end of racism, meaning they also had different followers.
